Biography

Following series of successful debuts at the world’s most prestigious concert venues, Claire Meghnagi has established herself as one of the most exciting voices to emerge from Israel in recent years, and is in particular demand for her interpretations of the baroque and classical eras.

Of her New York debut at Alice Tully hall with William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix in 2007, The New York Times wrote: “(Claire Meghnagi) had the most strikingly operatic sound, in terms of projection, power and suppleness, qualities she put to superb use…”  Her performances on this tour were received by international critical acclaim, pointing her out as “the most promising singing of the evening” (The Guardian), her “radiant voice” and “silvery gleam” (The London Times) and her “inspired, luminous and carnal interpretation” (Altamusica France).

Ms. Meghnagi’s wide-ranging repertoire includes all baroque composers as well as Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler and Rossini. She has become a frequent guest at the world’s most important concert halls, including Vienna’s Musikverein, Berlin’s Philharmonie, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky hall, London’s Wigmore Hall and the Barbican, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Lisbon’s Gulbenkian and Cite de la Musique in Paris.

Highlights of past seasons include Claire’s signature role Cleopatra (Handel/Giulio Cesare in Egitto) for the Finnish National Opera and the Estonian National Opera as well as concert version at the Tchaikovsky hall in Moscow; Aci (Handel/Aci Galatea e Polifemo) in France with Les Arts Florissants; Galatea (Handel/Acis and Galatea) at the Reinsberg Opera Festspiele; Night/The Plaint (Purcell/The Fairy Queen) at the Wigmore Hall and at the Voice of Music Festival; Euridice (Gluck/Orfeo ed Euridice), Despina (Mozart/Cosi Fan Tutte) and The Granddaughter (Milch-Sheriff/And the Rat Laughed) all for the Israeli Opera. Other roles performed in Israel include Rosina (Rossini/ Il Barbiere di Seviglia), Pamina (Mozart/ Die Zauberflöte), Zerlina (Mozart/Don Giovanni), and Thérèse/Tirésias (Poulenc). Ms. Meghnagi has sung the role of “Soprano 2” in Michael Sturminger’s The Infernal Comedy alongside legendary Hollywood star John Malkovich on tours in the USA and Israel. She has also performed as Marzelline (Beethoven/Fidelio) in Germany and Gilda (Verdi/Rigoletto) in Israel.

On the concert platform, Ms. Meghnagi’s has performed the entire major concert repertoire by Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Faure, Mendelssohn and Brahms, as well as Mahler’s 4th Symphony and contemporary pieces by Rodrigo, Villa Lobos, Penderecki, L. Lombardi and H. Birtwistel. She performed with The Israeli Philharmonic orchestra, Estonian Symphony, WNO orchestra, Russia’s State Chamber Orchestra, Bremer Philharmoniker, Ulster Symphony, Berliner Symphoniker, Israel Camerata, and Jerusalem Symphony. Her focus in Baroque music has led her to sing with the renowned period ensembles Les Arts Florissnats,  Wiener Akademie, Retrospect Ensemble, Helsinki Baroque, Koelner Akademie, and the Italian Concerto de’ Cavalieri. Her many festival appearances include Aix-en-Provence academie; Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci opening gala concert; Bad Kissingen new year’s gala; Resonanzen Festival Switzerland; the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival and Eilat Chamber Music Festival as well as the Felicja Blumenthal Music Festival in Tel Aviv.

Claire Meghnagi’s debut CD, Lonely Bird – art songs by Israeli composer Oded Zehavi, was released in March 2015 by the Israel Music Institute. The CD was recorded alongside pianist Irena Friedland and launched in recital tour in Israel and the USA. Her New CD Notte di Tempesta with the Israeli Barrocade ensemble includes scenes from Handel’s most dramatic heroines, will be released worldwide during 2016.

Claire won the prestigious Rosenblum Prize for the performing arts of 2016 and was named “Extraordinary Artist”, receiving the award for her unique skills as “an opera singer performing wide range of musical styles and cultures, all at the highest international level”. In 2009 she represented Israel in the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition with great success. She received scholarships from the America- Israel cultural foundation, the Israel Vocal Arts Institute, the Annie Sankey bursary of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, IMERYS, and won several competitions in her home country Israel.

Daughter of Italian cantor Isacco Meghnagi, she has particular interest in the traditional Jewish music of North Africa. She premiered works written for her by Israeli composers Oded Zehavi, Ella Milch-Sheriff, Eugene Levitas and Italian-Israeli renowned composer Luca Lombardi, as well as German-Jordanian young composer Saed Haddad. Ms. Meghnagi was recorded for the BBC, MEZZO, ARTE, France3, RBB Kulturradio, Estonian National Radio and the Israeli Broadcasting Authority. She is featured in the French TV documentary film Baroque Académie which won numerous prizes in 2008.

Graduated from the Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv, she continued her studies in Boston and Berlin. Her teachers include Agnes Massini; Sylvia Greenberg; Efrat Ben Nun and Lillian Watson.
